The Institute for Gravitational Physics (IGP), Leibniz University Hannover, Germany invites applications for the position of a Research Embedded Software Engineer (m/f/d) “Opto-Mechanical Inertial Sensors” (Salary Scale 13 TV-L, 100 %) to be appointed at the earliest possible date. The position is limited to three years.

The applicant will join to a multi-disciplinary team at the Institute for Gravitational Physics (IGP) of the Leibniz University Hannover. The IGP is a world leading research center specializing in gravity, gravitational waves and laser interferometry. The project will be carried out in close cooperation with the recently founded Institute for Satellite Geodesy and Inertial Sensing of the German Aerospace Center (DLR-SI), which is located nearby the IGP.
The IGP has a significant track of outstanding contributions to the success of both the LISA Pathfinder (LPF) and GRACE Follow-On (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) missions. With LPF and GRACE-FO, heterodyne interferometry has been proven as a feasible technology for some of the most ambitious metrology developments in the field of geodesy and gravity. Currently, our group is involved in the development of next generation opto-mechanical inertial sensors. Such an optical metrology system will enable the development of novel instruments such as gravimeters and gravity gradiometers with unprecedented precision, particularly on the low-frequency band, where current detectors are typically limited in terms of sensitivities. This instrument will be of great benefit for future geodesy applications that aim to improve on the gravity sensing capabilities, such as Next Generation Gravity Field Missions (NGGMs) and GOCE-type gradiometry missions.
The institute is seeking a Research Embedded Software Engineer to provide support in the development of advanced scientific instrumentation for the acquisition and processing of signals from laser optics experiments.
The long-term goal of the project is to build an engineering model of a compact inertial sensor as part of an opto-mechanical accelerometer for Next Generation Gravity Field Missions (NGGMs).
A successfully completed university degree (diploma or master) in physics, software engineering or in a comparable field as well as proven experience in embedded software is a prerequisite for the application. Experience on experimental laser optics as well as electronics is beneficial.
Furthermore, the ideal candidate will have experience with:
- Software optimization of digital signal processing algorithms based on Kalman filtering and non-linear fits as phase readout techniques for laser interferometry
- Design and software implementation of digital control loops to minimize excess noise contributions
- Design and software development (FPGA, microprocessors, memories, etc.) for the realization of the different instrument interfaces, including Ethernet, USB, Space Wire, SPI, UAR, etc.
- Boot software, application software and graphical interface development for instrument control and operation (C/C++/Python)
- Data analysis techniques, development of physical and mathematical models to describe the observed phenomena within the instrument
- Good command of English is expected
